How to Use the VA Rating & Payment Calculator
Step One: Add Disability Rating(s)
You can enter as many as necessary. For extremity disabilities, click the area of the body first, then pick the percent. For non-extremity disabilities, skip the extremity buttons and just pick the percent.
Step Two: Add Dependents
We’ll need some basic info on their relationship to you (kid, spouse, parent). For children, we’ll also need to know if they’re under 18 or between the ages of 18 and 23.
Step Three: View Results
Using the information above, the VA combined rating calculator will provide you with an estimated combined disability rating and monthly payment amount.

Your Combined Disability Rating
The VA takes a whole-person approach to ratings, meaning your combined rating isn’t just an addition of two or more percentages. Instead, the VA starts with your highest rating and applies subsequent ratings to your “healthy” percentage (i.e. the 60% remaining with a 40% disability rating). They then round to the nearest 10%.
Your Estimated Monthly Payment
Your estimated monthly payment is based on a number of factors:
- Combined rating: The higher your combined VA disability rating, the more you are eligible for in monthly compensation.
- Dependents: Having a dependent child (or children), spouse, and/or parent(s) increases monthly pay for veterans with a 30% disability rating or higher.
- Bilateral Factor: If your disability affects both arms or both legs, or if it affects your skeletal muscles, 10% is added to your total disability rating, and your payment goes up.
Monthly payments are increased for those with TDIU (Total Disability Individual Unemployability) or SMC (Special Monthly Compensation). If one or both of these apply to you, make sure to note that when entering information in the calculator.
How Disability Compensation Works
The VA offers monthly, tax-free compensation to qualifying veterans who suffered a new or worsened disability during service. Payment amounts are set yearly by the VA and are determined based on disability rating(s) and dependent status. The VA makes all final decisions on compensation eligibility and amounts.
