Frequently Asked Questions
Is this tool VA official?
No, it is a private estimate tool. While it does use official VA pay tables and math rules, the VA is the only one that can assign your final rating and monthly award.
Does a 90% rating equal 90% of max pay?
No. Pay is based on official rate tables, rather than a straight percent of the 100% amount.
How is the bilateral factor or SMC handled?
A bilateral factor or SMC will change your combined result and estimated payment. When using the calculator, use extremity buttons to account for bilateral factor or note that SMC is relevant in order to take these variables into account.
What happens if the veteran cannot work?
If a veteran is unable to work due to their service-connected disability, they may qualify for TDIU, or Total Disability Individual Unemployability. The VA sometimes pays the 100% rate through TDIU even if a veteran’s combined rating is lower.
How does VA math combine multiple ratings?
VA math combines multiple ratings by applying each new rating to what remains after the prior rating. For example, if your highest rating is a 30%, your next rating will be applied to your 70% “healthy” percentage, and so on, with the final combined rating rounded to the nearest 10%.
Are 2026 rates included?
Yes, our calculator has been updated based on 2026 VA disability compensation tables. Note that the VA makes all final award decisions.
Where can I find 2026 rates?
2026 rates became effective in 2025 and can be found here.
How does the bilateral factor work if both arms or legs are affected? What about SMC?
If extremities are affected on both sides, the VA may apply the bilateral factor, thus increasing the combined rating. The tool asks what extremities are involved and also considers SMC when relevant, though ratings and compensation ultimately depend on VA criteria and review.
