How to Apply for VA Disability for Gulf War Syndrome

There are three steps involved in filing a claim for Gulf War Syndrome compensation.

1
Step

Gather Supporting Evidence

The VA already acknowledges a connection between service in the Gulf War and the medically unexplained symptoms associated with Gulf War Syndrome. This greatly lowers the burden of proof for veterans, since there is no need to show a direct link between the symptoms and a particular service event or events. However, you will still need to provide relevant medical records, service records, and proof of honorable discharge.

2
Step

Submit an Application

You must complete and submit VA Form 21-526EZ, which is the standard application for VA disability compensation. Be as accurate and thorough as possible when filling out your application, since inaccuracies or incomplete information could delay your claim or lead to a denial.

Submit your application using the VA’s eBenefits portal, or print out Form 21-526EZ and mail a completed copy to the Department of Veterans’ Affairs, Evidence Intake Center, P.O. Box 4444, Janesville, WI 53547-4444. You can also submit your application in person at a VA regional office.

3
Step

Attend a C&P Exam

A Compensation & Pension (C&P) Exam is a medical examination scheduled by the VA to assess the severity of a condition. This exam must be completed by a VA-referred physician, with the subsequent findings playing a significant role in a veteran’s ultimate VA disability rating and eligibility for compensation.
